A Bargain In The Mist
After defeating the werewolves, the party continued toward Krezk, though Kaz was badly wounded and exhausted from the fight. They stopped for a short rest before continuing, with Caspian keeping a close eye on Kaz despite his insistence that he was fine. Along the way, they reached a bridge guarded by one of the undead sentinels. The guardian warned them that Baron Dimitri Krezkov was suspicious of outsiders and that the werewolves had been expanding their territory. Eventually, the party reached the steep mountain road leading up to Krezk. After some complaining from Kaz and the usual teasing between him and Caspian, they finally reached the village gates. The guards refused to let them in until they presented the letter from the Burgomaster of Barovia. Baron Dimitri soon arrived and read the letter, but instead of granting them immediate entry, he asked them for a favor. Dimitri's son had gone missing, and he believed that the witch Baba Lysaga, who lived near the ruins of Berez, might be able to locate him. In exchange for finding her and asking her to perform the spell, Dimitri promised the party entry into Krezk. The guards provided them with a golden bracelet as payment for the witch, along with several strands of the missing boy's hair. The party set off toward Baba Lysaga's hut, but the journey proved dangerous. They narrowly avoided a group of strange, heavily spiked creatures by hiding in the bushes. Later, they came across a dead wolf, which Caspian investigated in his usual questionable fashion before they continued. Eventually, they discovered a strange stone slab bearing the symbol of a spider. Sofia recognized it as being connected to the mysterious three ladies: the Weaver, the Seeker, and the Huntress. Not long after, a strange woman emerged from the silver mist and introduced herself as an associate of Baba Lysaga. She guided the party through the wilderness until they finally reached the witch's strange hut, perched atop an enormous tree stump. After a rather unpleasant climb, they entered the hut and came face-to-face with Baba Lysaga. Avery attempted to explain their situation, but Baba Lysaga instead singled out Caspian and instructed him to pluck a feather from one of the nearby ravens and place it inside an illusionary crib. Caspian reluctantly obeyed, after which Avery was finally allowed to explain their request. Baba Lysaga accepted their payment and the strands of hair, but informed them that she needed one final ingredient for her spell: a goat. Caspian and Avery were sent to retrieve one. They managed to find a goat and bring it back to the hut, with Caspian conveniently leaving most of the difficult work to Avery. With the goat secured, the party returned to Baba Lysaga's hut. They now had everything she had asked for. All that remained was to see whether the witch could truly locate Baron Dimitri's missing son, and what price her answer might ultimately demand.
