Ink and Illusion
Last session, the party traveled to the wizard’s tower after discovering the mysterious signet ring from Kasimir. At the base of the tower, they found an iron door covered in arcane symbols representing different schools of magic. Realizing the puzzle was connected to the ring, they eventually unlocked the door by pressing the symbols for evocation and necromancy. Inside, they discovered a central chamber with four stone statues holding chains attached to a platform that functioned as an elevator. Still recovering from earlier injuries, the party split briefly. Sophia and Avery rode the platform up first to scout the tower. At the top floor, they found a room that looked old but recently lived in. While searching the room, Sophia discovered a silver dagger wrapped in colorful bracelets, while Avery found papers near a stove—an advertisement for Rictavio’s carnival and a page from a diary. When Avery read the entry aloud, Caspian recognized the handwriting. After comparing it with a page from a monster guide in his possession, he realized the truth: the handwriting belonged to Rudolph van Richten, the legendary monster hunter. Combined with the shapeshifting Caspian had seen the night before, the party concluded that Rictavio is actually Van Richten in disguise. With that discovery, the party left the tower and began traveling back toward Vallaki. Along the road, they encountered two trappers who introduced themselves as Zsolt and Mathilda from Krezk. After a suspicious conversation and a strange warning about a deadly Vistani phantom, Caspian asked the man to show his teeth—revealing the truth. Both strangers transformed into werewolves, and a fierce battle broke out. The fight was brutal. Sophia nearly died before Kaz managed to save her with a healing potion. In the end, the party killed Zsolt, but Mathilda managed to escape into the forest. Wounded and exhausted, the party returned to the Blue Water Inn to rest, eat, and recover.

Ink and Illusion
- The party approached the base of the wizard’s tower, its iron door looming before them. The surface of the door was etched with a series of arcane symbols—each representing a different school of magic. After studying the markings, the party realized the puzzle likely related to the signet ring they had received from Kasimir.
- Through a bit of careful reasoning and trial and error, they discovered the solution: pressing the symbols for Evocation and Necromancy. With a heavy groan of metal, the door unlocked and slowly opened.
- Inside the tower, they found themselves in a circular chamber guarded by four stone statues. Each statue held chains that stretched upward toward the ceiling, all connected to a platform suspended in the center of the room. It appeared to function as a crude elevator that could carry them to the higher floors.
- However, the party was still recovering from the explosion earlier that day. Kaz and Caspian in particular were badly wounded. To minimize risk, they decided to split up briefly. Sophia and Avery took the platform first, riding it upward to scout ahead while the others recovered.
- The tower contained four levels, each with small rooms branching off from the central shaft. By the time they reached the fourth floor, they discovered a room that looked far older than the rest of the tower—but with signs that someone had been living there recently.
- Sophia began searching the room for anything useful. She opened a chest that carried a faint scent of lavender, though it turned out to be empty. After searching further, she discovered a silver dagger, wrapped in colorful bracelets that looked as though they might belong to a child. She pocketed the weapon, later handing it to Caspian.
- A few moments later, Kaz and Caspian arrived on the fourth floor as well.
- While examining the room, Avery noticed a suit of armor standing silently in the corner. Curious, he reached out and attempted to remove its helmet. The moment he touched it, the statue sprang to life and attacked. Other animated statues followed, and the room erupted into a short but chaotic fight.
- Fortunately, the party dispatched them quickly. After the battle, Kaz decided the armor might serve him better than it had served its previous occupant. With Caspian’s help, he suited up in the armor, the two of them working together to fasten the heavy pieces into place.
- Meanwhile, Avery moved to inspect a small stove across the room. Resting on top were two pieces of paper. One appeared to be an advertisement for Rictavio’s Carnival, while the other looked like a page torn from a diary.
- As Avery read the entry aloud, Caspian’s attention sharpened. Something about the writing stirred a memory. When Avery finished, Caspian asked if he could examine the papers himself—especially the diary entry.
- Taking the page, Caspian studied it closely. The handwriting looked strangely familiar. To confirm his suspicion, he pulled a folded page from his satchel—a page from a guide about werewolves written by the famed monster hunter Rudolph van Richten, a scholar known for documenting creatures of the night, especially vampires.
- Comparing the two pages, Caspian quickly realized the truth.
- The handwriting was identical.
- Combined with what he had witnessed the night before—Rictavio magically altering his appearance in the stables—Caspian came to a startling conclusion:
- Rictavio was actually Van Richten in disguise.
- With this discovery weighing heavily on their minds, the party decided to leave the tower and return to Vallaki.
- The road back wound through the dark forests of Barovia. As they traveled, two silhouettes appeared ahead on the path—a man and a woman. They introduced themselves as Zsolt and Mathilda, trappers from Krezk.
- Zsolt greeted the party cautiously and began telling a strange story. He warned them about a phantom—a Vistani woman said to walk between life and death, carrying a cursed blade and murdering the innocent. The warning seemed oddly specific, and the party grew suspicious.
- Zsolt then asked whether the group carried proper weapons for the dangers of Barovia. In response, Sophia casually revealed her silver weapon.
- At that moment, Zsolt’s expression darkened.
- All the while, the woman behind him remained silent, half-hidden behind his shoulder.
- Caspian, already suspicious and knowledgeable about the creatures that stalked Barovia’s forests, calmly asked the man to show them a “nice, big smile.”
- Instead, Zsolt gave a wolfish grin.
- His teeth lengthened. Bones cracked and shifted. Fur burst from his skin as his body twisted into the monstrous shape of a werewolf. Behind him, Mathilda transformed as well.
- The fight was brutal.
- These werewolves were far stronger than any the party had faced before. During the struggle, Sophia was nearly killed before Avery rushed to her side, forcing a healing potion between her lips and helping her back to her feet.
- Together, the party managed to bring down Zsolt, but Mathilda managed to escape into the forest before they could stop her.
- Exhausted and wounded once more, the party finally returned to the Blue Water Inn. There they shared a meal, tended to their injuries, and gathered their strength.
- But their night was far from over.
- Because now, armed with the knowledge of Rictavio’s true identity, the party prepared to go looking for the man who was really Rudolph van Richten.
