17 Avery’s frustration flared at the thought that they may have been unknowingly guided into all of this. But through questioning, the truth came out: Van Richten had not kidnapped Arabelle—he had rescued her from vampires. They also learned that Strahd had placed a bounty on her, which was why she had been taken in the first place.
17 After some discussion, Caspian allowed Van Richten to take a sample of his blood for study. The monster hunter promised answers within two days.
17 As the confrontation escalated, Arrigal produced the severed head of a man connected to the earlier events. Van Richten used a magical amulet to briefly reanimate it and question it. The head confirmed it had served Strahd—and that Strahd had indeed ordered Arabelle to be captured, a task given to the vampire Escher.
17 As they took in their surroundings, it became clear—both Arabelle and Van Richten had been expecting them.
17 Both Arrigal and Van Richten stood on the brink of violence, each assuming the other meant harm to the girl. Arabelle, however, intervened, urging the party to help them see reason.
17 Meanwhile, Caspian returned to Van Richten’s wagon for a private conversation. He asked a careful, hypothetical question: whether Van Richten had ever encountered someone bitten by a vampire who neither died nor turned—something… incomplete.
17 Rudolph van Richten, the famed monster hunter.
17 With the truth laid bare, the tension slowly eased. In the end, an agreement was reached: Arrigal and Van Richten would escort Arabelle safely to the church, where she would be protected. Arrigal also offered the party a single favor—he would mislead Strahd on their behalf, once.
16 Because now, armed with the knowledge of Rictavio’s true identity, the party prepared to go looking for the man who was really Rudolph van Richten.
16 Rictavio was actually Van Richten in disguise.
16 Taking the page, Caspian studied it closely. The handwriting looked strangely familiar. To confirm his suspicion, he pulled a folded page from his satchel—a page from a guide about werewolves written by the famed monster hunter Rudolph van Richten, a scholar known for documenting creatures of the night, especially vampires.
09 Stanimir wagers a worn deck of Tarokka cards that once belonged to his late wife. Eliza wagers a collapsible brass spyglass with a small, maneuverable mirror, allowing the user to peer around corners, Arturi wagers a short manuscript on werewolves authored by Dr. Rudolph van Richten. Ireena wagers a painted wooden hairclip in the shape of a sunflower that she once wore as a child.
07 As they reach a specific point on the road they head into the woods to find Van Richten's hidden stash using Coordinates to weapon stash. There's a tree like in the description but there's 5 zombies in front of it, 2 big ones and 3 small ones, mostlike the Lansten family.
06 They find Doru in the basement, but he's different than they expected. He is actively resisting his vampiric urges. Avery tests him by holding out his bloody arm, but Doru manages to resist for a whole minute, he is glad he can resist, so he gives the players the holy symbol and asks them to tell his father that he is still himself. Before they leave, he gives them the location of a hidden weapons cache that Van Richten kept in case of emergencies.
04 After lunch the burgomaster gives them a Letter in case the players want to enter the other villages in Barovia. The players get shown to their rooms for the night where Marianne finds a page of Van Richten's Guide to Vampires which Caspian recognizes from the Library.
