The Hag’s Bargain
Last time, the battle at Old Bonegrinder continued—and it nearly became the end of the party. The hags proved far more powerful than anyone had expected. As the fight dragged on, several members of the party came within inches of death. Then, halfway through the battle, the coven revealed their true strength. Their bodies twisted into monstrous new forms: one becoming a hulking crocodilian beast, another an elephantine monstrosity, while the eldest hag transformed into a terrifying, fiendish creature unlike anything the party had faced before. Just when defeat seemed inevitable, unexpected allies arrived. Lady Fiona Wachter appeared alongside Victor Vallakovich and several of Fiona's followers. While Fiona and her cultists conjured a wall of living shadows around the windmill to prevent the hags from escaping, Victor unleashed powerful magic through the shattered walls, finally turning the tide of battle. With the coven cornered and on the verge of defeat, the eldest hag called for a truce. She offered the party a choice: kill the hags where they stood, or spare them in exchange for three secrets about Strahd von Zarovich. After a difficult discussion, the party chose knowledge over vengeance. The hag revealed three unsettling truths. First, that Strahd's greatest secret lies within the Amber Temple, a forgotten sanctuary hidden high in the mountains where he forged his dark pact. Second, that Strahd is secretly searching for a way to escape Barovia itself, using the power of three ancient shrines to challenge the Dark Powers. And third... that someone within Castle Ravenloft has already betrayed him—his eldest bride, the vampire Sasha Ivliskova. Honoring the bargain, the party allowed the hags to leave, and the coven disappeared into the storm. After the battle, Lady Fiona promised that the weapons she owed the party would be delivered to the Blue Water Inn by morning. Victor, meanwhile, revealed that the eldest hag had given him a strange black stone tied to what he believed was a mysterious realm of shadows. Unable to uncover its purpose alone, he asked for the party's help in investigating it. With more questions than answers, battered and exhausted, the party made their way back toward Vallaki... ...carrying with them secrets that could one day change the fate of Barovia itself.

What comes to your head, when I ask you if you're afraid of death

TBD

The battle raged on, each passing moment pushing the party closer to their limits. Blow after blow was exchanged as spells and steel clashed against twisted claws. More than once, a member of the party stood on the brink of death, only to be pulled back by the desperate efforts of their companions.

Then, halfway through the fight, the hags transformed once again.

Their bodies twisted and contorted into even more horrifying shapes. One grew into a hulking, crocodilian monstrosity with a powerful tail and a maw full of jagged teeth. Another swelled into a massive, elephant-like beast whose sheer size threatened to crush anything in its path. The eldest hag underwent the most disturbing transformation of all. Her already hideous features became even more grotesque as her body stretched into something almost demonic, her elongated limbs, wicked claws, and monstrous grin making her look less like a hag and more like a fiend from the depths of the Hells.

The tide of battle continued to turn against the party.

Just as defeat seemed inevitable, help arrived from the treeline.

Lady Fiona Wachter and several of her followers emerged from the storm, accompanied by Victor Vallakovich. Without hesitation, Fiona and her cultists began chanting in unison, weaving a wall of living shadows around the windmill to prevent the hags from escaping. At the same time, Victor raised his hands and unleashed a powerful spell through the shattered wall, the surge of arcane energy crashing into the coven and finally shifting the momentum of the battle.

Cornered and badly wounded, the eldest hag suddenly called for the fighting to stop.

Rather than begging for mercy, she offered the party a bargain.

They could kill the coven where they stood...

Or spare their lives in exchange for three pieces of invaluable knowledge about Strahd von Zarovich.

The party paused to consider the offer. Though every instinct told them to finish the battle, information was a weapon just as valuable as any blade.

In the end, they accepted.

True to her word, the hag revealed three secrets:

Having upheld their end of the bargain, the party allowed the hags to leave. Without another word, the three creatures vanished into the storm, disappearing into the darkness as swiftly as they had come.

Bruised, bloodied, and utterly exhausted, the party took a moment to recover before speaking with their unexpected rescuers.

Lady Fiona assured them that the weapons she had promised would be delivered to the Blue Water Inn by the following morning, honoring her agreement with the party.

Victor, however, had a request of his own.

Before departing, he revealed that the eldest hag had entrusted him with a strange black stone. According to her, it was connected to another place—a realm of shadows—and Victor believed it served as some kind of key. Unable to uncover its purpose on his own, he asked for the party's help in investigating it.

With that, Victor took his leave, leaving the party alone with the weight of everything they had learned. As they began the journey back toward the Blue Water Inn, their minds lingered on the Amber Temple, Strahd's mysterious ambitions... and the revelation that even within Castle Ravenloft, the Devil himself could not fully trust those closest to him.
