Avery revealed he sought revenge for his younger brother, already lost to Strahd.
Avery’s frustration flared at the thought that they may have been unknowingly guided into all of this. But through questioning, the truth came out: Van Richten had not kidnapped Arabelle—he had rescued her from vampires. They also learned that Strahd had placed a bounty on her, which was why she had been taken in the first place.
Sophia went to purchase healing potions, while Avery and Kaz returned to the inn, where Avery opened up about his struggles with social interaction—his uncertainty in how to speak and act around others. Kaz listened and offered what guidance he could.
As the party approached the wagon, they saw Rictavio already there, kneeling beside it and adjusting one of the wheels. Sensing the tension, Avery and Sophia stepped forward to speak with him, while Caspian and Kaz lingered a short distance behind.
They returned to the inn together and joined Avery and Kaz for supper.
As Avery read the entry aloud, Caspian’s attention sharpened. Something about the writing stirred a memory. When Avery finished, Caspian asked if he could examine the papers himself—especially the diary entry.
However, the party was still recovering from the explosion earlier that day. Kaz and Caspian in particular were badly wounded. To minimize risk, they decided to split up briefly. Sophia and Avery took the platform first, riding it upward to scout ahead while the others recovered.
Meanwhile, Avery moved to inspect a small stove across the room. Resting on top were two pieces of paper. One appeared to be an advertisement for Rictavio’s Carnival, while the other looked like a page torn from a diary.
These werewolves were far stronger than any the party had faced before. During the struggle, Sophia was nearly killed before Avery rushed to her side, forcing a healing potion between her lips and helping her back to her feet.
While examining the room, Avery noticed a suit of armor standing silently in the corner. Curious, he reached out and attempted to remove its helmet. The moment he touched it, the statue sprang to life and attacked. Other animated statues followed, and the room erupted into a short but chaotic fight.
Inside, they also found a caged chicken—loud, restless, and deeply irritating. Caspian, already on edge, stormed in, grabbed the bird, and snapped its neck without hesitation before tossing it to Avery.
The party decided to return to the Baron’s mansion, hoping to gain access to the library and uncover the meaning behind the mysterious signet ring. Avery knocked on the door, and after a moment, a guard answered, eyeing them suspiciously. When Avery asked if they could enter the library, the guard hesitated—clearly confused—before turning to the Baron, who happened to be passing nearby. After hearing their request, the Baron allowed them entry and summoned a maid to escort them.
Returning to the Blue Water Inn, the party rested and discussed their next steps over bowls of Danika’s stew. After the meal, Caspian quietly asked Urwin for a bowl of water and headed upstairs. Soon the group split up: Avery went to the blacksmith, Sophia stepped outside, and Kaz followed Caspian to their room.
The party sought out Kasimir Velikov in a nearby dwelling. Inside, the walls were lined with books and elven artwork. A scarred and bruised man rose from meditation before the fire and introduced himself as Kasimir Velikov. He admitted he could not identify the signet’s owner, but recognized the runes carved into it as belonging to evocation and necromancy magic. He handed the ring to Avery.
With a new lead in hand, the party returned to Vallaki. As they approached the Baron’s mansion once more, Avery stepped forward and knocked, hoping to gain access to the Baron’s library—and perhaps uncover the truth behind the ring and Arabelle’s disappearance.
Avery moved to end it, raising his weapon to take Volenta’s head. Sophia protested, but before the blow could land, Volenta wrenched free and leapt to a neighboring rooftop. Avery jumped after her but ended up hanging from the edge. Seizing the moment, Caspian used Kaz’s help to vault forward, climbing over Avery and continuing the chase. But Volenta proved too quick. With unnatural speed and strange abilities, she fled beyond Vallaki’s walls and vanished into the night.
Meanwhile, Avery had already returned and was questioning Henrik. The coffin maker admitted that Strahd had manipulated him into allowing Volenta inside. He spoke of a strange green pentagram that had appeared upstairs and confessed that the vampires had been staying there for months. When the rest of the party arrived—Caspian still perched comfortably on Kaz’s back—Henrik explained that Volenta had ordered him to steal the bones so the church’s protection could be destroyed.
Not far away, Sophia sank to her knees on the tiles, whispering through tears, “I’m sorry for bringing you here, Eliana…” Kaz approached awkwardly, doing his best to comfort her despite not quite knowing how. They spoke quietly for a moment before Kaz turned to Avery and asked about Caspian. Avery gestured toward another rooftop, saying he might need a moment.
The chase across Vallaki's rooftops was frantic and dangerous. Caspian led the pursuit, close behind Volenta, with Sophia only a few steps behind him. Kaz and Avery, less agile on the tiles, struggled to keep pace but followed as best they could.
Father Lucian led them to Milivoj’s home. A woman answered the door, children playing around her while others peeked nervously from behind furniture. When Avery asked for Milivoj, one child claimed he was sick. Avery pressed the matter, and Milivoj soon appeared from upstairs, several children clinging to him like branches. The moment he saw the party, he went pale, gently ushered the children away, and listened as the group confronted him. After much reluctance, Milivoj confessed that he had stolen the bones at Henrik's request, tempted by the promise of money.
Inside the church, the party approached Father Lucian Petrovich, the priest of St. Andral’s Church. Avery led the conversation, explaining that they had been sent by Shaggy to escort Ireena here for protection. The discussion was interrupted by Milivoj, who regarded the party with open hostility. He asked whether Father Lucian wanted him to escort “these outsiders” from the church grounds. Father Lucian dismissed the suggestion and ordered Milivoj away.
The party split up to investigate. Kaz and Avery examined the crypt and its surroundings, discovering a strand of short black hair, disturbed dirt, white flower petals, and a large footprint beneath a window—suggesting the thief had escaped that way. Meanwhile, Sophia and Caspian questioned Yeska. The boy insisted he hadn’t told anyone about the bones, but admitted he had seen Milivoj digging near their resting place and overheard part of a suspicious conversation. When the group regrouped, all evidence pointed toward Milivoj.
With Father Lucian and Ireena in tow, the party made their way to Henrik the Coffin Maker’s Shop. Every window was boarded over, preventing any view inside. Caspian attempted to pick the locks on both the front and back doors, only to find them already destroyed after Henrik refused to let them in. In response, Avery kicked in the back door.
As they ate together, a commotion stirred on the far side of the tavern. A flamboyant bard named Rictavio was entertaining a crowd with dramatic tales of vampires and monsters. Sophia and Avery joined the listeners, while Caspian and Kaz remained at their table. When the performance ended, Rictavio retired for the night, and Avery followed soon after. Sophia lingered at the counter, waiting for Urwin the innkeeper to return from the kitchen.
Morning came abruptly when Sophia woke Kaz and Caspian with little ceremony, giving them just enough time to dress before breakfast. Avery was nowhere to be seen.
The party approached the city gates and was stopped by the guards. As a precaution against vampires, each traveler was ordered to bare their teeth for inspection. They were also required to surrender any silver upon entry. Through careful deception, the party convinced the guards they carried none, despite the truth. Avery paid the entrance fee for everyone, and at last they were allowed inside the city, eager to find both the Baron and a place to rest.
The calm didn’t last long. Soon Sophia and Avery were locked in a heated argument of their own, voices rising over the fire as the rest of the camp pretended not to listen. Meanwhile, Caspian and Kaz sat shoulder to shoulder, passing a bottle of wine between them and watching the confrontation unfold like reluctant spectators.
Marianne wagers a little ornate hand mirror. Caspian takes one of his many rings the he wears and wagers that. Kaz wagers a nice Lantern saying "I think some among us might have more use for it", glancing at Marianne. Avery wagers a small wooden holy symbol in the shape of a disk with five different colored dragon heads on it.
The players hear a sound coming from a bush. Avery grabs Eliza by the collar and rips her out of the bush. She admits to trying to spy on them for Strahd. She tells them that few Vistani agree with her beliefs or loyalty to Strahd. A fact that drives her to curse the "ungrateful" and "faithless" among them. Although she doesn't believe Barovia is the ancestral home of the Vistani, Eliza believes it to be a new home that Strahd found for them. They tie her up to a tree and gag her, continuing on their way.
Suddenly Avery attacks a rat, it was one of Strahd's spies. They continue talking and eating before heading to the church. When they arrive at the church no one answers knocking on the door, but Parriwimple appears from the side, telling them that Father Donavich hasn't come out in days. Parriwimple also invites the players to visit Bildrath’s Mercantile
They find Doru in the basement, but he's different than they expected. He is actively resisting his vampiric urges. Avery tests him by holding out his bloody arm, but Doru manages to resist for a whole minute, he is glad he can resist, so he gives the players the holy symbol and asks them to tell his father that he is still himself. Before they leave, he gives them the location of a hidden weapons cache that Van Richten kept in case of emergencies.
The players manage to do some crowd control with a successful persuasion by Avery with help from Caspian. They get invited into the mansion by Ireena and Kolyan where they all eat Lunch together while talking and looking at a small dilemma the burgomaster has been facing.
As the house starts collapsing the players wake up Avery and start to run for the exit. Gustav durst stops them as they try to get up from the dungeon to the basement. They manage to convince him to let them pass, but he's scared of Elisabeths' wrath.
They then head north until they find a staircase even further down. The room they end up in is full of relics it seems, south they find a prison and Avery collects a ring of one of the skeletons in it. They find a secret door that opens up to the Ritual Chamber.
#battle In a closet, a broom attacks Avery as soon as he turns around, Kaz throws Sir Quaksalot the third unto the Broom killing it.
Players walk around, find a well, find random loot. Avery finds a book. It's a journal belonging to Drasha, it has lists of names and descriptions, but all of them end with fed to Walter.
Avery Ryuu the Half-Elf Knight
It all starts with Caspian standing in front of a wall of fog, when he suddenly notices Marianne at the same wall. Avery appears behind them and before they can talk they are swallowed by the fog. They appear in front of the Death House where Kaz is already inspecting the gate of the house.
