Happy Points

Happy Points

Instead of Happy being a binary - have or have-not - I propose to expand the use of Happy into an entire new feature called "Happy Points" (IP). Each player character can accumulate a number of equal to their Proficiency Modifier.

Happy During Encounters

Happy Points can still be used to give yourself advantage on any d20 roll, as normal.

However, you can now spend multiple Ingenuity points on a single roll - adding additional d20 rolls to the advantage pool, and then selecting the best result from 3 or more dice.

This does not apply to situations where you already have disadvantage on a roll. In those situations you can only spend a single point to cancel out disadvantage - you cannot use more points to give yourself more results on this kind of roll.

In addition, characters who possess any relevant abilities can now spend Happy Points in the following ways:

Spend 1 IP to enact Rage
Spend 1 IP to gain an additional Bardic Inspiration Die
Spend 1 IP to use Channel Divinity
Spend 1 IP to use Wildshape
Spend 1 IP to use Action Surge or Second wind
Spend 1 IP to gain an additional Mastery Die
Spend 1 IP in place of 1 Ki Point
Spend 1 IP to regain 5 points of Lay-on-Hands healing
Spend 1 IP in place of 1 Sorcery Point
Spend 1 IP for an extra free use of Hunter's Mark
Spend # IP in place of a Spell Slot of equal level

Rogues have not been "left out" - the fact that they have no special resources on which to spend Happy Points means that they lack a weakness that other classes possess.

Rogues do not need special resources to use their class abilities - with the exception of Spell Slots, they can use them indefinitely. This is an advantage over other classes.

Happy Between Encounters

During a Short Rest, you can spend Happy Points in the following ways:

During a Long Rest, you can spend Happy Points in the following ways:

Happy while Dying

Your pool of Happy helps you struggle to stay alive. While making Death Saves, you can Spend 1 IP to negate 1 failure.

You can also spend IP to give yourself Advantage when rolling Death Saving Throws.
